2-Azaspiro[4.4]nonane (2-APN) is a diterpene that is found in a variety of plants, including Acacia berlandieri and Acacia rigidula. 2-APN has been shown to act as a linker in the biosynthesis of serotonin, which can bind with 5-HT1A receptors. The long chain of 2-APN makes it efficient for binding to 5-HT1A receptors with high affinity. 2-APN has been shown to be an effective ligand for 5-HT1A receptors by x-ray structures and receptor activity studies on rat brain tissue. This compound also inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme COX1 and COX2, which are responsible for the production of prostaglandins involved in inflammation and pain. The imine formed from 2-APN and an amine donor reacts through an E2 elimination reaction mechanism to produce an aziridine ring system
