Description

Azaperone is a potent and long-lasting antagonist of the central alpha 2-adrenergic receptor. Azaperone prevents the binding of endogenous or exogenous agonists to these receptors, thereby blocking their physiological effects. Azaperone has been shown to have a strong immobilizing effect in animals, as well as anaesthetic properties that are comparable to those of medetomidine and etorphine. It has also been used in the treatment of chronic pain and for surgical anaesthesia in humans. The drug is administered intramuscularly, intravenously, or subcutaneously. It is highly biocompatible with cells and tissues and can be used in blood sampling procedures, such as hematology or coagulation testing.
