• Description: Alloferon is a drug that is used to treat bowel diseases. It has been shown to be effective in mouse tumor models and in the treatment of bowel disease. Alloferon is a complex of two compounds, alloferon A and alloferon B, which are nitrogen-containing molecules with biological properties. These compounds have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, including the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Alloferon A and alloferon B are also able to bind to Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and activate it. TLR4 activation leads to the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Alloferon A and alloferon B also inhibit platelet aggregation through the suppression of phosphodiesterase activity, which reduces the production of cyclic nucleotides. The activity index for this drug is high because it has multiple mechanisms for inhibiting inflammation.
