8-Acetyl-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin is a potent antagonist of the 5-HT1A receptor. It has been shown to have anticancer activity in vivo, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells by blocking the binding of serotonin to 5HT2A receptors. 8-Acetyl-7-hydroxy-4-methylcoumarin has also been used as a reference compound for NMR spectroscopy and XANES analysis. The copper complex of 8-acetyl-7 hydroxy 4 methyl coumarin is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other compounds. This compound is synthesized from phosphorus pentoxide and acetyl chloride in a two step process with subsequent oxidation of the resulting product. It has been shown that 8 acetyl 7 hydroxy 4 methyl coumarin inhibits locomotor activity in mice, which may be due to its antagonistic effects on 5HT1A
