3-Acetyl-4-hydroxybenzonitrile (3-AOBN) is a nonpolar solvent that can be used as an extractant for polar compounds. 3-AOBN binds to the protonated form of cromakalim, which is found in the membrane of cells and can be used to extract other polar molecules from cells. 3-AOBN has been shown to bind to proteins by intramolecular proton transfer and is a good solvent for organic solvents such as acetone and methanol. It has also been used as a substitute for 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid in the synthesis of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine.
