4-Amino-3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile is a synthetic organic compound that has been used to stabilize hormones. It has also been used in the synthesis of aromatic amines and as a fluorescent probe for determining the presence of functional groups. 4-Amino-3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile is synthesized from 4-aminobenzonitrile by reaction with formaldehyde and thiourea in an acidic medium. The structure of this compound consists of two amine groups, which are connected to each other by a benzene ring. The two amine groups are also stabilized by the presence of an electron withdrawing group, which is represented by a methyl group at position 3. This makes the molecule more stable than compounds without this group. 4-Amino-3,5-dimethylbenzonitrile can be used as an antagonist for thiazolidinedione, catalysed reactions.
