Amarogentin is a glycol ether with hypoglycemic effects. It has inhibitory properties against the growth of cancer cells and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory activities. Amarogentin is a natural compound that can be found in the leaves of an African plant, Amaroqein (Amaranthus viridis). Its chemical structure was first determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Amarogentin has been shown to inhibit the activity of growth factor-β1 and to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. It also binds to response elements in DNA and inhibits the expression of genes involved in cell proliferation, such as cyclins D1 and D2, Bcl-2, c-myc, c-myb, and p21.
