3-Amino-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid methylester is a sweetener that is used as an alternative to sugar. It has been shown to have no caloric value and does not promote tooth decay. 3-Amino-benzofuran-2-carboxylic acid methylester is metabolized in the body to form 3,5-diamino-1,6 benzofuran, which has a sweet taste. 3,5-Diamino-1,6 benzofuran is currently undergoing clinical trials as a treatment for age related macular degeneration.
