Ammonium iodide is an inorganic compound which can be used as a chemical inhibitor. It has been shown to inhibit the HIV-1 protease, which is a key enzyme in the virus' life cycle. Ammonium iodide binds to the active site of the HIV-1 protease and prevents it from cleaving its substrates, thus inhibiting viral replication. The optimum concentration for ammonium iodide is 4 mM. This compound has been shown to have a protective effect on cardiac cells against oxidative stress and can be used in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to measure the transport properties of ions across cell membranes.
