5-Amino-2-methylpyridine is a ketone that has been shown to have anticancer activity. It is synthesized from pyridine and an alkylating agent, such as methyl iodide. 5-Amino-2-methylpyridine can be used as a precursor for podophyllotoxin, which is an important intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, herbicides, and other chemicals. This compound has been investigated for its ability to form imines with aldehydes and amines. The crystal structure of 5-amino-2-methylpyridine shows hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen atom and two hydroxyl groups on the adjacent pyridine ring.
