• Description: Alkyl benzene sulfonic acid (ABS) is a surfactant that is used to extract toxicants from soil. ABS is also used as a desorption agent for bio-monitoring of toxicants in the environment. ABS can be immobilized onto an agarose matrix, which provides a high surface area for collection of target compounds. The removal and recovery of ABS from the matrix can be done by elution with water or other solvents. The specific growth rate of organisms that are exposed to ABS depends on the type and concentration of ABS, as well as the type of organism being studied. The matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) technique has been successfully applied to pinpoint the presence and identify the strain of organisms in sea water samples.
