The b-alanine ethyl ester is an ester of the amino acid, b-alanine. It is a colorless liquid that can be synthesized from piperidine and acrylonitrile. The catalytic reduction of the amide group with hydrogen gas followed by acidolysis results in the formation of this product. The b-alanine ethyl ester is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. It has been shown to have antioxidant effects by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid oxidation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This compound has also been shown to have anti-tumor activity against brain tumors and leukemia cells in cell culture experiments. The chemical structure of the b-alanine ethyl ester is shown below:
