b-Amyrin is a natural product that has been shown to have pharmacological effects, such as anti-inflammatory activity, in experimental models. It has been shown to inhibit the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) by inhibiting the activation of transcription factor NF-κB through signal pathways. It also inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and COX-2 enzymes responsible for synthesizing PGE2 in vitro. b-Amyrin also decreases the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and IL-6 in response to LPS stimulation. In addition, it has been demonstrated that b-amyrin can reduce inflammation in bowel disease by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory cytokines. The mechanism of action is not fully understood but may be due to inhibition of protein synthesis or phosphorylation reactions.
