Allyloxybenzaldehyde is an optical sensor that can be used in excipients, pharmaceutical preparations, and other products. It has been shown to react with the hydroxyl group in aqueous media to form a coordination complex, which is sensitive to light. This compound has also been used as a cross-linking agent for polyvinyl alcohol films. Allyloxybenzaldehyde has been shown to have an uptake of up to 12% by weight in urine samples, which may be due to its ability to bind with trehalose and polyvinyl alcohol.
