Description :5alfaAndrostan -3alfa-ol is a synthetic androgen receptor ligand. It binds to the androgen receptor, a transcription factor that regulates gene expression, and stimulates the production of proteins that are involved in infectious diseases. 5alfaAndrostan -3alfa-ol has been shown to stimulate the production of detoxification enzymes in mice. This compound also induces cell death in tissue culture cells by activating apoptosis pathways. 5alfaAndrostan -3alfa-ol has been shown to be toxic in mice, inducing hepatic steatosis, an increase in fat accumulation within liver cells. The toxicity of 5alfaAndrostan -3alfa-ol may be due to its ability to bind fatty acids and activate receptors for these lipids.
