Apocynin is a naturally occurring plant flavonoid that has been shown to inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect against tubulointerstitial injury. Apocynin has been shown to inhibit the pro-inflammatory response by blocking the activation of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). The anti-inflammatory effects of apocynin are most likely due to its ability to suppress ROS production, which may be caused by its antioxidant activity. Apocynin also inhibits protein oxidation, which may lead to cell death.
