• Description: Aciclovir is a drug that belongs to the group of antiviral agents and has been used in the treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, varicella zoster virus (VZV) infections, and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. Aciclovir is a prodrug that is converted into acyclovir, its active form, by hydrolases in cells. This conversion prevents viral DNA replication and transcription by inhibiting the synthesis of viral DNA polymerase, which is required for viral DNA synthesis. Aciclovir is also an inhibitor of toll-like receptor signaling pathways.
