5-Amino-1-N-methylindole (5AMIN) is a reactive chemical that has been shown to be able to bind to colchicine. The binding between 5AMIN and colchicine inhibits the polymerization of microtubules, which are necessary for cell division. 5AMIN also has been shown to have anti-leukemic activity in vitro and in vivo against human leukemia cells. The anti-leukemic activity of 5AMIN is due to its ability to cause DNA damage through the induction of caspase 3, an enzyme that plays a role in apoptosis. This compound is highly active at nanomolar concentrations and is biodegradable.
