Ammonium iron (III) oxalate trihydrate is a porous material with a pore size of less than 0.5 nm and a porosity of about 34%. It has been used as a catalyst for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Ammonium iron (III) oxalate trihydrate can be easily regenerated by heating to 120 °C and then cooling the material, which can be reused several times. This porous material has been shown to have magnetic properties that are reversible in nature, which may be due to the presence of ferrite particles.
