Z-L-aspartic acid-beta-benzyl ester is a prodrug that consists of an amino acid and a benzyl ester. The amino acid is Z-L-aspartic acid and the benzyl ester is beta-(4-nitrophenoxy)ethoxy. It has been shown to inhibit the transport of acidic amino acids across the blood brain barrier, which may be due to its physicochemical properties. This compound also inhibits enzymatic reduction, catalytic reduction, and dehydrating activities. Z-L-aspartic acid-beta-benzyl ester has also been shown to be effective in preclinical studies for inhibiting glutamic excitotoxicity in vivo and excitatory amino acid release from cerebrocortical synaptosomes in vitro.
