D-a-Aminoadipic acid is a piperidinecarboxylic acid that has been found to inhibit the uptake of glutamate into rat brain synaptosomes and to reduce locomotor activity in rats. D-a-Aminoadipic acid was also shown to inhibit the racemase from metabolizing L-DOPA to D-DOPA and showed a molecular modeling effect on enzymes such as glutamate decarboxylase. The inhibition of this enzyme leads to an increase in glutamate levels in the brain, which may be responsible for its excitatory effect. D-a-Aminoadipic acid was also shown to form disulfide bonds with other amino acids, making it difficult to study using chromatographic methods.
