5-Aminovaleric acid hydrochloride is a metabolite of the amino acid lysine, which is used as an experimental drug for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. It has been shown to inhibit the enzyme that converts 5-aminovaleric acid into a potent antagonist of the NMDA receptor in the brain. 5-Aminovaleric acid hydrochloride may protect the hippocampal formation from damage caused by wild-type strains of bacteria that have high levels of dinucleotide phosphate. The physiological function of 5-aminovaleric acid hydrochloride is not well understood, but it is believed to play an important role in energy metabolism and intramolecular hydrogen transfer reactions.
