1-Acetylnaphthalene is a naphthalene derivative that can be synthesized in the laboratory. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a variety of microorganisms, including Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and yeast. 1-Acetylnaphthalene also inhibits the growth of certain fungi. The mechanism of action for this compound is not well understood. One proposed mechanism involves hydrogen bonding between the functional groups of the molecule and active methylene sites on the bacterial cell wall. Another possible mechanism is that formyl groups in 1-acetylnaphthalene react with functional groups on the bacterial cell wall through a transfer mechanism to inhibit cell growth. This compound also has fluorescence properties and may be used as an indicator for pH changes in solutions containing it.
