This compound has been used as a carbon source for microbial growth and has been shown to be an effective genetic control agent for the bacteria Escherichia coli. 4-Aminocinnamic acid has also been shown to inhibit the growth of butyric acid producing bacteria, such as Clostridium butyricum, while promoting the growth of lactic acid producing bacteria, such as Lactobacillus plantarum.
