Description

Valerian is a perennial herb that belongs to the Valerianaceae family. It has been used since ancient times as an herbal remedy for treating anxiety and sleep disorders. Acetoxyvalerenic acid is the main active component of valerian, and it can be found in many plants such as ginger, grapefruit, and Japanese honeysuckle. The chemical structure of acetoxyvalerenic acid is similar to that of benzodiazepine drugs like diazepam. Acetoxyvalerenic acid has been shown to inhibit GABA-A receptors in animal studies and human clinical trials. This compound also reduces the amount of time that it takes for mice to fall asleep by increasing the amount of time spent in REM sleep stages.
