Description

Shanzhiside methyl ester is an acetylated form of shanzhiside, a natural product that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine. This compound was isolated from the leaves of Lamiophlomis bracteata, a plant found in China. Shanzhiside methyl ester has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL1β). It also inhibits the growth of herpes simplex virus by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis and RNA replication. The pharmacokinetics of shanzhiside methyl ester has been studied in rats and humans. In rats, it was found that this compound is well absorbed orally and distributed into all tissues including blood cells. Shanzhiside methyl ester is metabolized by liver enzymes and excreted mainly through urine.
