Anhydroicaritin is a flavonol glycoside that has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells in vitro, as well as in vivo. It has also been shown to be effective against diabetic patients, who have a high level of creatine kinase in their urine. In animal experiments, anhydroicaritin was given orally and showed no adverse effects on the liver or kidneys. Anhydroicaritin is hydrolyzed by acid to release the aglycone caritin. The enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is an amino transferase that is present in human tissues and cells. Anhydroicaritin has also been shown to inhibit the activity of histochemical staining enzymes such as horseradish peroxidase and alkaline phosphatase.
