Description

2-Amino-3-(5-fluoro-1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid is a molecule that has been found to have antibacterial activity, which can be due to its steric interactions with the bacterial cell membrane. It also has an effect on wild type and resistant mutants of E. coli and Salmonella, but not on other Gram negative bacteria. The molecule has been found to bind to tryptophan residues in proteins, which may be responsible for its inhibition of protein synthesis. 2-Amino-3-(5-fluoro-1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid is a keto acid and it can be synthesized by the enzyme tryptophanyl tRNA synthetase from tryptophan.
