Description

Alpha-Aminomethyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)benzenemethanol (AMTB) is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthetase. It is used in medicinal chemistry to study the conformational and kinetic properties of this enzyme. AMTB binds to the catalytic site of S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthetase, thereby blocking the production of a key metabolite and consequently inhibiting DNA synthesis. This compound has been shown to have anticancer activity in vitro by inhibiting protein synthesis. X-ray crystallography studies have revealed that AMTB binds to the active site of the enzyme with high affinity, occupying space that would otherwise be occupied by ATP.
