Description

(2R)-2-Amino-3-(2,2-dichloro-1,1-difluoroethyl)sulfanylpropanoic acid (SDS) is a reactive chemical that can be found in the cytosol of human cells. SDS has been shown to react with vinyl ethers and form an acid. This compound is also bifunctional, meaning it can act as both a nucleophile and an electrophile. It has been shown that SDS reacts with DNA to form adducts, which are molecules containing the chemical group of one molecule attached to another molecule. These adducts have been shown to cause mutagenicity in humans and in model systems such as mice. The dose-dependent nature of this reaction means that the more SDS a person is exposed to, the greater their risk for kidney damage.
