1,2,3,3-Tetramethyl-3H-indolium iodide is a fluorescent probe that is sensitive to anions and cations. It can be used in many applications such as the detection of fluoride ions or hemicyanine by measuring their fluorescence. The colorimetric assay is an efficient method for detecting anions through the use of 1,2,3,3-tetramethyl-3H-indolium iodide. This colorimetric assay is based on the reaction between 1,2,3,3-tetramethyl-3H-indolium iodide and pyridine hydrochloride to produce a pink color. The absorbance of this reaction at 540 nm can be measured using a spectrophotometer with a filter of 546 nm. This method has been found to detect ammonium ion concentrations down to 10 mM.
