Sodium methacrylate hemihydrate is a methacrylic acid that is used in the production of polymers, resins, and adhesives. It has shown genotoxic activity in vitro by causing DNA strand breaks and cell lysis. Methacrylic acid can also cause damage to the kidneys, liver, and lungs when inhaled or ingested. In addition, this compound has been shown to have toxicological effects on the central nervous system. Studies have shown that methacrylic acid may be synergistic with other compounds such as glycol ethers that are known to be carcinogenic.
