3-(3-{[(Dimethylamino)methylene]amino}-2,4,6-triiodophenyl)propanoic acid hydrochloride (DDMPI) is a diagnostic agent for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases. DDMPI is used to activate the immune system in human serum, which is then analyzed for autoantibodies and other substances that are characteristic of autoimmune diseases. This drug has been shown to be effective against cancer cells in long-term studies. It also has shown efficacy in treating bowel disease and cardiac effects. DDMPI is an inhibitor of DNA synthesis and replication, which may be due to its ability to inhibit RNA synthesis or protein synthesis. The mechanism by which this drug inhibits protein synthesis may be due to its ability to act as a competitive inhibitor of glutathione reductase. DDMPI has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
