1-Chloro-9H-carbazole is a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug that is used to treat inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. It has been shown to produce cell lysis by binding to and activating the enzyme adenosine deaminase, which converts adenosine into inosinic acid. 1-Chloro-9H-carbazole also inhibits the production of hydrogen chloride and chlorine atoms, which are necessary for the formation of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Furthermore, it has been shown to inhibit choroidal neovascularization, a condition that occurs when new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. This drug binds to target tissue and inhibits chemical reactions that lead to inflammation and pain. 1-Chloro-9H-carbazole also has an effect on microaggregates and can be used in vitro assays.
