2-Bromo-5-cyanopyridine is a diamidine that is synthesized by the reaction of 6-bromonicotinic acid with 2,2'-diaminodiphenyl ether. The functional groups which are present in 2-bromo-5-cyanopyridine are amino, nitro and bromine. This compound has been used as an efficient method for treatment of trypanosomiasis, which may be due to its ability to induce rapid death of the parasites. 2-Bromo-5-cyanopyridine has also been used in research on photophysical properties and kinetics data. It is a diamide that can exist in either an orientation with nitrogen at the center or one with nitrogen at the end. It reacts with aryl halides to form carbon-carbon bonds and amines to form ureas.
