Description

Benzaldehyde is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3COCH2CHO. It is a chiral molecule that can exist in two forms, depending on the relative configuration of the hydroxyl group. Benzaldehyde is used as a reagent for the preparation of other chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It has shown genotoxic effects in bacteria and is mutagenic to mammalian cells. Benzaldehyde also has metal-chelating properties, which can be used to remove metal ions from samples for analysis by mass spectrometry or for chemical reactions. The biological properties of benzaldehyde are poorly understood and research into its effects on infectious diseases, oxidation catalysts, and skin cancer is ongoing.
