4-tert-Butylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid is a monocarboxylic acid. It has been used as an analytical chemical for the estimation of naphthenic acids in petroleum oils. 4-tert-Butylcyclohexanecarboxylic acid has been identified as one of the major components of crude oil. The titration method is based on the formation of a complex with cyclopentylmethyl, which can be determined by measuring its UV absorption at 260 nm. This chemical can be used to synthesize 2-phenylbutyric acid, which is a useful carbon source for microorganisms that produce biodegradable plastics and other materials. The synthesis of this chemical starts with a strain of bacteria that converts monoacetic acid into 2-phenylbutyric acid. The mechanistic pathway involves stereoisomers and aldehydes.
