3-Bromo-2-chloropyridine is a synthetic chemical that acts as a nucleophile. It can be used for the synthesis of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and serotonin, which are important neurotransmitters in the brain that regulate mood. 3-Bromo-2-chloropyridine has been shown to cross link with human cells in culture, suggesting it may have clinical development potential for treating depression. The compound has also been shown to inhibit s-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, an enzyme involved in the metabolism of catecholamines, by acting as a competitive inhibitor. This inhibition results in an increase in catecholamine levels and may lead to improved depressive symptoms.
