1-Bromododecane is an antimicrobial agent that belongs to the class of quaternary ammonium compounds. It is a tertiary amine that is used in nutrient solutions for the selective control of microbial growth and as a biocide in water treatment. 1-Bromododecane has been shown to be toxic to cells, with a low degree of membrane permeability. The toxicity of 1-bromododecane may be due to its reaction with sodium carbonate, which generates heat and bromide ions.
