The product of this reaction is racemic-1,3-butanediol. In one study, the enzyme escherichia coli cells were used to immobilize the alcohol in order to produce a catalyst for asymmetric synthesis. The affinity of these enzymes was found to be dependent on the concentration of butanediol.
