Description

Tramadol is a centrally acting analgesic that binds to mu opioid receptors and inhibits serotonin reuptake. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in bowel disease, inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and cytokines. Tramadol has been shown to be effective against cancerous cells in cervical cancer and is used for the treatment of psychosis. This drug also has an effect on the detrusor muscle in patients with neurogenic bladder. Tramadol is a prodrug that is converted by CYP2D6 into its active metabolite, O-desmethyltramadol (M1). Tramadol can be used to treat humans infected with HIV as well as those with inflammatory bowel disease.
