It is soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, and acetone. 3-Bromosalicylaldehyde has been used as an intermediate for the synthesis of other organic compounds such as piperazine and salicylic acid. The compound is also used to study the inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus. 3-Bromosalicylaldehyde inhibits the growth of S. aureus by binding to its DNA and preventing cell division.
