• Description: Polymyxin B is a cationic detergent that binds to bacterial membranes and destroys the cell wall. Polymyxin B has been shown to be a potent antagonist of spermatozoa and microglia, which are cells that maintain the homeostasis of the central nervous system. It also has been shown to be an inhibitor of chemotaxis in polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN), which are white blood cells that participate in inflammatory processes. Polymyxin B has been shown to have chemotactic activity for PMN and inhibit protein synthesis in mitochondria. This compound also inhibits chelerythrine, a cyclase inhibitor that is used as an antineoplastic agent.
