Benzydamine is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to be effective in treating postoperative throat inflammation, mucositis, and pharyngitis. Benzydamine also has an anti-inflammatory effect on the respiratory tract. It is thought to act by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Benzydamine has been shown to have significant biochemical properties that may be related to its anti-inflammatory activity, including polymer compositions and analytical methods for determining whether it inhibits streptococcal pharyngitis. Benzydamine also inhibits the growth of oral pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes and Prevotella intermedia.
