- 4-tert-Butyl-1,2-diaminobenzene
4-(tert-Butyl)-o-phenylenediamine is a water-soluble, aromatic diamine. It is used as an inhibitor for the polymerization of phenylenediamines and other monomers that contain an amine group. A postulated mechanism for this inhibition is the formation of a hydrophobic complex with the monomer that blocks access to the active site on the polymerizing enzyme. 4-(tert-Butyl)-o-phenylenediamine can be used in combination with ammonium persulfate, aluminium sulfate, and persulfate to induce polymerization reactions. 4-(tert-Butyl)-o-phenylenediamine has been shown to have a low safety profile in animal studies and has been tested by the FDA in humans without adverse effects.
