Description

6-Bromopurine is a purine nucleoside that is synthesized from 6-chloropurine and pyrimidine. It can be used as an anti-cancer agent because of its ability to bind to the DNA helix, thereby inhibiting RNA synthesis. 6-Bromopurine also has a high affinity for protozoan parasites such as Plasmodium vivax, Pneumocystis carinii, and Leishmania donovani. The pharmacokinetic properties of this drug are not well understood, but it is thought to be metabolized in the liver by hydroxylation or deamination.
6-Bromopurine can be synthesized efficiently through the reaction between pyridine and 2-aminophenol with a yield of about 65%.
