Lanthanum is a metal that has been shown to catalyze the polymerization of (2E)-4-(benzylamino)-4-oxobut-2-enoic acid. Lanthanum has also been used to activate monomers and improve their solubility in organic solvents. The results show that lanthanum is an effective activator for this type of polymerization. The use of lanthanum as a catalyst for this reaction was found to be superior to other heterogeneous catalysts, such as acid or chloride, because of its ability to stabilize the amide group formed during the reaction.
