2-(3-Bromophenyl)ethanol is a probe that can be used for the study of photochemistry. It is also a reagent for natural product synthesis and an efficient catalyst in heterocyclic couplings. 2-(3-Bromophenyl)ethanol reacts with amines to form oximes and with thiophenes to form sulfoxides. It is a proton acceptor under acidic conditions, yielding phenols and bromides. 2-(3-Bromophenyl)ethanol has been shown to be effective as a traceless linker in photochemically mediated reactions between thiols and disulfides.
