But-2-ene-1,4-diyl diacetate is a catalyst that is used to alkylate aldehydes. It is also used for the acetoxylation of phenols and polyphenols. The acetoxylation reaction mechanism includes an acid catalyst, which activates the ester group, followed by the formation of a tetrahedral intermediate and the release of water. The kinetic studies show that But-2-ene-1,4-diyl diacetate has an alkylation rate constant of 8.8 x 10^4 L mol^(-1) s^(-1). The technique that is most commonly used to measure this rate constant is gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This technique provides selectivity and high resolution measurements with a relatively low sample volume requirement.
