5-Bromonicotinamide is a molecule that has been shown to induce apoptotic cell death in bacteria. It reacts with proteins and amines, forming reaction products that can bind to bacterial enzymes. This binding prevents the formation of pyridinium cations, which are required for bacterial growth. 5-Bromonicotinamide also binds to human serum albumin, preventing it from binding to chloride ions. The chloride ions are then available for reactions with other molecules such as halides and chlorine atoms. This results in the production of other molecules such as bromide and chlorite ions.
